Moby Dick by Kevin Toya

The story I read was called Moby Dick, Moby Dick is an adventure novel. The author was named Herman Melville. He was born on August 1, 1815. He was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. Herman was a great story writer but was not a very well known; also his work had not made any best seller list but had some good stories like Moby Dick.

Moby Dick is about a sailor named Ishmael. Ishmael was a school teacher but when he sailed he was a merchant sailor. The moral of the story is that being on sea you have to have to believe in your instincts, trust, and have faith in your crew members.

When Ishmael was about to go sailing he had some bad feeling about the trip because he had heard a man by the name of Elijah say that the boat was curse and something bad would happen. Then the old man said “Did you guys sign a paper that said anything about you souls?” In amusement he walked off calling the man phony. Then as Ishmael walked off he had remember a prophet from the bible. There was a man named Elijah and he warned of bad things to come. As the day continued, they had aboard the ship, and as they went on, Ishmael had a bad feeling. As he had remember the mans words of bad things to come something bad had happened. The captain wanted to get a whale named Moby Dick because he wanted to get revenge. Most people on the ship had said that Moby Dick was a mean whale and did not like the sailors going after him. And some had said to believe that Moby Dick was a creation sent by god.  As they hunted the great whale they got hurt and as Ishmael was in the water he had wish his trusted his instinct.

In order to have good instincts you must trust yourself. As Ishmael’s conclusions on things about Elijah and finding, that he was right. He was wishing that he had trusted himself in the first place. When Ishmael was on the sea they made contact with another boat called Jeroboam, and meet with another guy named Gabriel. As Gabriel came on the ship he claims himself to be the prophet from the bible. Gabriel warned them about the whale that it was shaker god who came down in a whale’s body.

As they went on, one of the men on ship said that a “devil man” was on the ship. One of the crew members on the ship had said “And who might that be”? The man replied, and said Fedallah; he’s in a devil disguise. The man had said “where did you here that from”? “Well, I heard it from some of the other crew members” said the sailor. Then the other crew men begin talk about him. Then as the other sailors were bringing in the whale, they saw Fedallah stand and look at the whales head lines and his own palm lines as if he were reading the future.

The sailor had to have faith in their crew because they had to work together to catch a whale. The sailors had to have faith because they knew that if you were fall in the water they would jump in and get you. A man named Queequeg, went in the water after a man had fallen in. As a crew they need to believe in each other, although the man had accused Fedallah of being a devil in disguise. They still had to worked together.

The story of Moby Dick was a good story of struggle, trust and adventure. Ishmael went though a lot on the seas, though he was warned a few times he was still strong though the end. Ishmael had his instincts, his trust, and his faith in his crew, for Queequeg had saved his life even past death. Thought out the story the reason why the captain was chasing the white whale was to get revenge. Ishmael just wanted to get on the sea to bring his life back to life, and to restore his spirit, but was sent on a chase to catch the mean white whale they called Moby Dick.

The first day of school, FRESHMEN practiced ‘stream of consciousness’ writing outdoors, using all five senses.  Here are some results.

THE LAND WHERE I LIVE

By Jerome Concha

The land where I live is in Jemez Pueblo.  Jemez Pueblo is in a valley surrounded by mountains and hills.  The colors of the mountains are blue and green, red and light brown.  There are also large mesas which we used to live on a long time ago, when there were wagons, horses that we used to ride and there was no electricity around except lightning.  In those mountains, my friend and I killed a deer.  We were very happy about the kill.

The land where I live is called Jemez Pueblo, also known as Walatowa.  Walatowa has great mountains, red mesas, different kinds of animals.  Jemez mountains are very colorful.  Some have layers of red, orange, dark red or white layers.  Some mountains are white or cream-color.  The trees make the mountains even more beautiful.  The greatest part of Jemez is the mountains.  When the sun sets and you see the mountains, you just want to paint a picture.

(Kayla’s essay sounded like poetry, so Ms. Phelan took the liberty to put it in the form of a poem.)

The land where I live is

wonderful,

beautiful,

it’s red.

I love where I live.

The mountains are big.

The sky is beautiful.

The wind is warm.

The day is hot.

And I feel good.

The land where I live is beautiful.  There are mesas with different colors.  Red, maroon, and a little bit of blue.  Jemez is the place to be.  It’s nice and full of wonderful things.

There are a lot of trees.  The smell is always clean.
